Standon May Day came back in 2022 after two years off for Covid, and more than five thousand people turned out on the bank holiday Monday.
As always, it began at sunrise the day before, when Standon Morris danced round the puddingstone on the High Street at 5.30am. On the Monday the High Street filled with 55 stalls and 12 food outlets, children from local schools danced in the arena, and Zoe Barton was crowned May Queen. There was circus skills and archery on Burrs Meadow too.
May Day was started almost fifty years ago by Fred and Rae Pinkney. It’s now run by a small volunteer committee, and the money it raises goes to local groups like the First Responders, the Scouts, the Brownies and the village hall. The organisers thanked High Street residents for giving up their road for the day, and visitors for leaving hardly any litter.
